Ebook About From the bestselling author of Cold Waters comes a brooding thriller about a woman who must decide if safeguarding her family is worth burying a truth that will haunt her forever. Thirteen years ago, Jori Trahan’s boyfriend vanished without a trace. Now, after moving back home to Alabama to care for her ailing grandmother and autistic brother, she comes face-to-face with the deadly mystery behind his disappearance.Jori has a rare form of synesthesia, meaning she can “hear” colors; to her, tones of voice are as unique as fingerprints. With the help of this ability and a sympathetic cop, Jori comes dangerously close to uncovering the truth. But those responsible will go to any length—including murder—to keep their dark secrets buried.Soon, it seems that no one in the sleepy bayou town is safe, and after Jori’s brother is kidnapped, she knows she must drop the investigation or risk losing her family. But when protecting them means letting an evil deed go unpunished, putting family first may be the last thing she’ll ever do.Book Not One of Us Review :
Synesthesia provides an intriguing twist to this sordid murder mystery in a sordid townThis is one of those stories with a small southern town full of what seems to be a disproportionate number of not very nice people aka "southern gothic". Thankfully, the protagonists - Jori, a young woman whose boyfriend was murdered on the night of her prom 13 years earlier, and Teagan, a young cop who's trying to move forward and leave her past behind - are sympathetic. The bare bones of the plot isn't that original, but incorporated into it is the fact that Jori has synesthesia - she can see sound as colors. I had a friend years ago who had that; it sounds freaky but fascinating. So, it's obvious that somehow this ability will play into the mystery - and it does. The author does a great job at building up the tension and suspense until the moment when the killer is revealed. Everything coordinates to move the story forward, letting out just enough information to keep you surprised & keep it progressing to the point that the mystery is solved, and there are several smaller twists added on after that. By the time the killer's identity is discovered, I was on the edge of my seat for nearly the rest of the book! The explication was good, though not quite as solid as diehard mystery lovers might wish. The ending is a little melancholy but still positive & hopeful - overall, a well done mystery!*Potential content issues:A fair amount of sleeping around but told in the abstract. A character remembers being raped in a flashback scene - details are limited to the essential & minimally graphicLanguage is moderate: 34 d-mns, about 4 dozen h-lls, 14 sh-ts, 4 f-bombs With one mystery after another cropping up in a small community in southern Alabama, there is much uncertainty in this compelling story cleverly written by Debbie Herbert. The author has a knack for taking the reader on a journey of uncovering clues and then trying to determine if the information if fact or fiction. In NOT ONE OF US, the unknowns just keep mounting, and I repeatedly tried to decide if assumed connections would end up being verified or proven false. By the time the book was finished, I had experienced a multitude of emotions and lived through some harrowing situations with the main characters. When Jori Trahern was in high school, her boyfriend disappeared one night and was never heard from again. She eventually left the bayou area of Alabama and moved away, making her home in Mobile, yet she did occasionally come back to visit her grandmother and younger brother who has autism. But when the elderly woman is not doing well, Jori come back to assist her two closest relatives. While there to decide about their care, she learns some details that might finally disclose the truth of what really happened to her boyfriend plus the long-ago killing of one of her family members. After another crime takes place in the present, Jori wants answers and so does a local police officer who feels the need to prove herself. As I continued reading NOT ONE OF US, my guesses as to what had actually transpired in the past as well as the current happenings kept changing with every new fact that was exposed. Just when I thought I had an incident figured out, the author would toss in a new belief which left me even more stumped. There are certainly a lot of unexpected turns occurring, and each one added to my interest because of the increasing intrigue. The story is told from multiple viewpoints, letting me know what was in the minds of several individuals concerning the same set of circumstances. Also, some past events are depicted when they took place, showing me the truth about these episodes.
